Onglyza FAQs

Is Onglyza dangerous?

There are a number of serious side effects associated with Onglyza, including the increased risk of heart failure and pancreatitis. Though many people who use this Type 2 diabetes medication will not experience these side effects, the consequences for those that do can be exceedingly serious. Although there are now warnings of these side effects on the drug’s labeling, many patients had already been prescribed this popular medication by physicians who were not provided with the information necessary to properly screen their patients.

Why is there a new warning on Onglyza’s labeling?

In April of 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee convened to discuss and vote on the results of a neutral clinical trial called SAVOR-TIMI 53. The clinical trial was a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial meant to determine the safety of saxagliptin (Onglyza) for people who use the drug to manage their blood-sugar levels. After examining the results of this clinical trial, fourteen of the fifteen members on the FDA’s advisory committee voted to include a warning on Onglyza’s labeling about the increased risk of heart failure associated with the drug. One member of this advisory committee voted to remove the drug from the market altogether.

What if I or someone I love has already been hurt?

If you or someone you love has experienced any of the dangerous side effects associated with the use of Onglyza, you may be eligible to pursue compensation from the drug’s maker to offset some of the costs associated with all the pain and suffering you or a loved one has endured. That being said, our legal team at Hach Rose Schirripa & Cheverie LLP, can evaluate your claim and help you work through any legal action that will be necessary to pursue compensation against a large pharmaceutical company.

How can I tell if Onglyza is to blame for my, or my loved one’s, poor health?

There are a number of well-documented side effects that are known to be dangerous for some people who use Onglyza. As such, your physician or your loved one’s physician should be able to determine whether a cardiac event is likely to have been caused by the use of Onglyza. In the same way, a physician should be able to determine whether the pancreatitis you or a loved one developed is likely to have been caused by this Type 2 diabetes medication. Once you have medical documentation that establishes a likely connection between the drug and either of these serious health issues, there is a good chance that you could be eligible to take legal action.

What kind of compensation will I be able to recover with my claim?

Though each and every claim will have unique circumstances that will ultimately be used to determine exactly what compensation may be recovered, there are a few general forms of compensation that are common to claims like these. Once we evaluate your claim, our legal team can help you develop a comprehensive legal strategy to pursue compensation for all of the medical care you or a loved one needed to deal with the dangerous side effects of Onglyza, the amount of income lost during recovery, and any diminishment to the quality of life you or your loved one used to enjoy.
